FAO at 80: Rome Marks a Milestone for Global Food Security
Rome hosted the official celebrations for the 80th anniversary of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), founded in 1945 to combat hunger and promote sustainable agriculture worldwide. The anniversary events took place at FAO headquarters, reaffirming the Organization’s central role in addressing food insecurity, climate challenges and rural development. The high-level ceremony brought together heads of state, ministers and international leaders. Among the most prominent participants were His Holiness the Pope, who delivered a message on the moral imperative of ensuring the right to food for all, and the President of the Italian Republic, alongside senior representatives of the United Nations system and foreign governments. Eighty years after its founding, FAO used the Rome celebrations to underline the urgency of renewed international cooperation, innovation and shared responsibility in building resilient and inclusive global food systems for the future.
